Module summary

This module is aimed at you if you are a student interested in the development of modernism and postmodernism throughout the twentieth century. Examples will be drawn from a variety of media, such as: fiction, poetry, film, television, photography, music and architecture Integral to this module will be support in the development of study skills, including essay writing and use of technology.

Objectives

This module will give an overview of Modernity and Post-Modernity. It will provide students with a more recent period of history and give students an understanding of the nature of modern and postmodern culture and how it is defined by the principal theorists in the field. This will give students a contrast to the earlier period of history (Renaissance) considered in the first module. Integral to this module will be support in the development of study skills, including further essay writing skills and the use of technology.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this module students will be able to:
-Demonstrate an understanding of the role that various authors and debates have played in shaping modern and post-modern thought.
-Research a subject and contribute this research to web-based tools
-Have an understanding of modernity/ postmodernity in relation to a variety of media such as fiction, poetry, film, television, photography, music and architecture
-Have awareness of the role of diversity

Skills outcomes
Ability to analyze concepts and texts critically.
Skills in using web-based tools.
Ability to critically analyse works of art etc.

Syllabus

The content will cover such areas as:

- Definitions of Modernity and Post-modernity
- The development of Modernism/ Postmodernism since the first world war/ second world war
- The application of Modernism/ Post-Modernism to real-life examples from film, literature, art, music, architecture, photography etc.
- Representation of diversity, such as: age, gender, race, disability, sexual orientation and class
