Module summary

This module explores the background to the English Renaissance and the changes in works, ideas and ways of thinking during this period. Integral to this module is support in the development of academic skills, especially within the general areas of presentation and exam skills.

Objectives

This module will give an overview of the English Renaissance and the background of this period in terms of the European Renaissance and the later medieval period in England. It will reflect on elements of culture, history, literature, politics, art etc. with a particular focus on the context of works in this period. This module will also particularly focus on the development of confidence and academic skills, including presentation skills and exam preparation.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this module students should be able to:
-Understand different elements of the Renaissance period, including an overview of some of the key people, texts and concepts
- Analyse works in the light of the context in which they were produced as well as in terms of their style, structure, etc.
- Communicate ideas accurately and clearly

Syllabus

The content will cover such areas as:
-The background of the English Renaissance, including the European Renaissance and later medieval England
-An overview of some of the key themes, such as print culture, authorship, voyage and discovery and humanism.
-Overview of some key literary and historical texts, such as Thomas Moore's Utopia; William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, etc
-Overview of key concepts eg. Humanism,
-Aspects of culture and identity
-Representation of diversity, such as: age, gender, race, and class.
