Module summary
This module is aimed at you if you are a student interested in understanding the ways in which religion, politics and society intersect. The module is taught from an interdisciplinary perspective and will introduce key features of the interrelation between religion, politics and society through examination of a range of contemporary issues.Objectives
This module will give an overview of the interplay between religion, politics and society, examining the ways in which these areas intersect. It will provide an understanding of the means by which contemporary religious expressions shape, and are shaped by, groups and society. Students will be introduced to an interdisciplinary approach to the study of religion, examining a range of contemporary issues including: religion, peace and conflict; multiculturalism; women and religion; and religion and the environment. Students will develop awareness of issues of diversity, such as: belief, culture, gender, race, sexual orientation and social class.Students will be supported in the development of their own independent study skills and will gain an introduction to reflective writing and exam skills. They will be required to complete an exam with advance information on questions and a reflective account. They will be given individual support for these assessments as required.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
-Demonstrate a basic understanding of how religion and belief might shape and define needs, interests and community identities.
-Critically reflect on observations of religious pluralism in practice.
-Identify key areas of diversity and similarity between and within religious belief systems.
-Apply a critical understanding of the relationship between religion, politics and society to a contemporary issue.

Syllabus
The content will cover such areas as:
-Introducing students to a range of different disciplinary outlooks and methodologies in the study of religion.
- An overview of key issues in the relationship between the religious and the secular.
-Historical and contemporary perspectives on Leeds as a multi-faith city.
- Examination of the interplay between religion, politics and society in a range of contemporary issues.
