Module summary
This module allows you to pursue an independent research project in an area of music or sound studies in which you have a strong interest, agreed in negotiation with an appointed supervisor. The module involves devising, carrying out, documenting, and critically reflecting on an independent project, and it is the project documentation and critical reflection, rather than the project work itself, that is assessed. Accordingly, the Individual Project is an ideal opportunity to explore an appropriate area of interest without risk of any inexperience adversely affecting your ability to achieve on the module.Objectives
Individual Project grants students the opportunity to pursue a project in an area of music or sound studies in which they have a strong interest. The goal is for students to gain experience of devising, carrying out, documenting, and critically reflecting upon a new project driven by their own initiative.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will:
• Demonstrate project management skills such as time management, the formulation and communication of project outcomes, goal-oriented working, flexibility, problem-solving skills, presentation skills, evaluation skills
• Demonstrate the ability to work independently, including advanced self-evaluation skills, initiative and critical thinking
• Demonstrate the ability to draw from previously learned and recently acquired knowledge, including contextual knowledge, research techniques, methodologies and the application of theories
• Communicate experience and ideas in coherent, imaginative, and logical ways appropriate to the form of assessment
Syllabus
Students devise an independent project in negotiation with their supervisor and the module leader to be undertaken across the year under their own initiative. The scope of this module is therefore broad to allow for a diversity of potential projects, including creative practice and research.

Devising, planning, discussing the project and producing statements of intent and learning contract: 75 hoursResearching and locating appropriate sources, online learning, private preparation, planning and executing the project, as appropriate for the discipline: 210 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will receive feedback on a substantial draft proposal during semester 1 from their individual supervisor. There will also be an opportunity for feedback from peers taking the module during an introductory seminar, in which students present and discuss a brief overview of their project. A further seminar in semester 2 will be used to present work in progress, and will feature peer feedback as well as constructive comments from the module leader.
