Module summary

Students will study identities and social inequalities as foundational dimensions of sociology and social policy, driven by the key research areas in our School. They will engage in contemporary policy debates throughout the module alongside key sociological ideas.

Objectives

The module will:

- Develop understanding of the main sociological and policy perspectives relating to identities and inequalities

- Support students to contribute to informed sociological and social policy debates about issues relating to identities and social inequalities

- Develop skills in exploring topics covered using sociological concepts and approaches

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate a familiarity with basic concepts, social implications and means of researching social identities and inequalities

2. evaluate the effects of social policies on different social groups

3. evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to analysing inequalities

4. interpret and evaluate the underlying sociological concepts and theories of identity, inequality and social policy;

Syllabus

Students will explore policy and practice relating to identities and social inequalities. We will draw on examples related to our academic areas of expertise, with a strong focus on the lived experience of inequalities. It will engage in ‘myth busting’ on the rhetoric and reality of inequalities in 21st century society, with intersectionality as a key analytical lens.
