Objectives
To enable engineering geologists to learn the basic principles of soil mechanics and foundation engineering as practiced by civil engineers.Skills outcomes:
- critical evaluation of data;
- in depth knowledge of the basic properties of soil and their behaviour.
Syllabus
Classification and mechanical properties of soils
Soil stress: effective and total stress, pore pressure parameters
Soil testing: triaxial, shear box, PSD, consistency limits, consolidation, permeability
Earth pressures, active and passive
Seepage and flow
Consolidation
Earth dams and embankments
Stability analysis
Bearing capacity
Types of foundation
Bearing capacity; shallow and deep foundations
Settlement of foundations
Earth retaining structures; gravity and cantilever retaining walls, diaphragm and secant pile walls, sheet piling, reinforced earth
