Module summary
This module focuses on the appropriate design, maintenance, operation and management of water supply systems within resource constrained environments, especially in the Global South. The module introduces technical issues related to water supply systems, including on system design and water quality issues. In addition, it includes student-led activities to examine issues related to the management of systems and the maintenance of water safety within drinking water systems.Objectives
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, student should be able to…
- Design to pre-feasibility level water supply systems, including in relation to water source development, water treatment and distribution
- Identify and monitor water quality issues within drinking water systems, with special reference to priority biological and chemical contaminants
- Apply decisions on the design, maintenance and operation of drinking water systems to maintain drinking water safety
- Describe the major socio-economic and technical factors that influence the management of drinking water supply schemes in resource constrained environments

- Pumped water supply networks
- Water distribution network design
- Low cost and conventional water treatment
