Module summary
The aim of the module is to introduce students to cosmetic science and to develop understanding of the concepts used in this subject. Secondly, it aims to apply this knowledge to develop practical skills to design and communicate appropriate investigative procedures related to cosmetic science.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to ...(a) To introduce the principles of cosmetic science using a variety of examples and to gain basic understanding of the scientific concepts covered.
(b) To introduce students to the core technologies and the product areas they support.
(c) To understand the most common types of chemical ingredients and their proper application in various cosmetics.
(d) To understand the context for, and examples of, regulations associated with cosmetic science.
Learning outcomes
1. A knowledge of core technologies and methodologies appropriate to the module.
2. An ability to acquire and integrate information and use information to solve problems appropriate for PGT level
3. An ability to effectively communicate and present through a variety of approaches.
4. An ability to use research skills to synthesise ideas related to the subject
5. An ability to work with others as a part of the team to plan, organise, select and manage information. 6. An ability to efficiently debate and argue scientific concepts related to cosmetics.
Syllabus
Introduction to core scientific concepts e.g. colour, polymer, additives and analytical science – as employed in cosmetic science. Module will cover the theory aspects designed for the general understanding with the most fundamental core technologies used to support the product development in the cosmetic industry. Various relevant types of cosmetics will be covered, such as skin care, sun care, decorative cosmetics, hair care and fragrances

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Presentation and group learning are introduced in seminars, with opportunity for feedback on initial ideas and their development.Feedback on practice Multiple Selection Exam (MSE) in advance of summative MSE.

Multiple selection questions: assessment is 1h slots (includes built-in ‘additional time’), at end of semester; test is 45 min in a computer cluster. This assessment will meet the following learning outcomes: LO1 and LO2 Group project involves undertaking research study of a particular topic associated with the module objectives and creating a presentation, which will also be assessed via a viva. This assessment will meet the following learning outcomes: LO3-LO6.
