Module summary

The rising prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks and strokes, as well as diabetes, is a critical global health concern. This module provides an introduction to these complex health issues. You will explore the essential basics of the cardiovascular system's functioning and the intricate regulation of glucose and energy within the human body. You'll delve into the pressing need for innovation in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients, emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach.

Objectives

The objectives of this module are to provide a basic understanding of the causes of different types of disease affecting cardiovascular system, together with information about how evidence for this is gathered, for students with limited biological/medical background.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Identify the basic functional anatomy and working physiology of the cardiovascular system.

2. Investigate and describe the most common cardiovascular diseases.

3. Explore basic cardiovascular diagnostic tools and treatment modalities including prevention.

4. Explain the basic concepts of blood sugar control including the need for it and explore the basic treatment options for diabetes and hypertension including prevention.

Skills outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

1. Academic and digital skills – searching, identifying and evaluating biomedical literature

2. Sustainability and Healthy Living – basic understanding of prevention and early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes

3. Technical and Scientific Presentation
