Module summary

In our ever-changing world, we encounter pressing sustainability issues, from ensuring affordable and clean energy to finding sustainable ways to produce food, manage water, and manufacture products for a growing global population. Solving these challenges calls for innovative engineering solutions grounded in the knowledge of chemical and process engineering. In this module students will delve into the vital role of chemical engineering in tackling the global issues outlined in the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Objectives

This module aims to give an overview of engineering and technological solutions that can help address a range of sustainability challenges that the planet currently faces. Using the UN Sustainable Development Goals as a framework to identify pressing issues, the module will provide an understanding of how chemical and process engineering competence is key for many state-of-the-art developments. The module will explore the topics through a mix of lectures, thought-provoking case studies, simulations, and interactive group discussions.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. discuss diverse sustainability challenges and recent developments made to address these challenges
2. explain chemical engineering principles that underpin the development of solutions for global sustainability issues
3. evaluate engineering bottlenecks and ideate feasible solutions for sustainability challenges

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

In-class group discussions: There will be several instances of group discussion during the module. Instructor will provide immediate feedback when collating discussions from student groups.
Other in-class tasks: Students will be asked to engage in several in-class tasks, such as formative quizzes, polling and virtual post-it boards. Feedback will be provided by the instructor through a discussion of the responses.
One-on-one discussion with the instructor: Students can obtain additional formative feedback by meeting the tutor individually in dedicated office hours outside of the module teaching hours.
