Module summary

This module delves into the profound impact of revolutions in modern history. You will consider key questions like, "How have revolutions shaped the modern world?" and "What distinguishes a revolution from revolts and rebellions?" Through this exploration, you will gain an understanding of a selection of major upheavals in world history.

Objectives

This module introduces students to revolutions in modern history through an examination of case studies from around the globe. The module aims to establish the key features of revolutions and how they are different from, for example, revolts or rebellions. Learning activities will centre on examining first-hand accounts from revolutions, such as texts, images and videos, to develop students’ abilities to interpret historical evidence and compare case studies. In-class activities will also develop students’ skills communicating to public audiences and working in teams, in support of their assessments.

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Examine and contrast a range of global revolutions
2. Interpret historical evidence from global revolutions
3. Define what makes a revolution a revolution

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be consistently monitored through observation of student participation and pre-seminar virtual tasks. Students will have the option for one-to-one discussions with the tutor in office hours, and the opportunity for a group meeting before the poster presentation.
