Important information!

This module has an independent application and enrolment system – you cannot enrol online. Apply for this module through the Students into Schools scheme on MyCareer (https://mycareer.leeds.ac.uk/leap/placements.html?page=schemes&id=20&service=Careers%20Service). There are 3 separate elements to the application

1. Complete the application form on MyCareer
2. Provide details of two referees
3. Begin the process of securing an enhanced DBS (child protection) check, by:

a. Registering on Security Watchdog
b. Sourcing the necessary documentation – proof of identity and address
c. Having your documents checked in person at the Careers Centre on campus*
All of this must be completed by 17.00 on 23rd June.

Please leave plenty of time to source the necessary documents for your DBS – Unfortunately we cannot accept late applications unless there are mitigating circumstances.

* If you are on a year abroad or placement year outside of Leeds and not able to attend in person before the 23rd, please indicate this on the application form and we will support you to make alternative arrangements.

Module summary

This module enables students to go into a local school and carry out a short project. You will get some training beforehand and you will have a contact teacher in the school to help you. Places on this module are limited by the number of schools willing to provide placements. This module may be taken only by students taking at least another 40 credits in Mathematics.

Objectives

1. To allow students to work in collaboration with a local school on a project relevant to the need of the school or college in Mathematics;
2. To allow students to design, negotiate and manage their work in co-operation with an academic supervisor and a member of staff from the school or college;
3. To encourage school pupils to participate actively in a Mathematics based project in collaboration with university students;
4. To raise the profile of Mathematics as an exciting, challenging and rewarding discipline to study at university.

Syllabus

1. Students taking this module will be placed in a local school or college with a remit to help organise Mathematics activities within the school or college, through Mathematics lessons or other activities.
2. Students will, during their time with the school or college pupils, organise a Mathematics based project (or projects) with the aim of promoting the excitement of Mathematics. Such a project or projects may be at any level appropriate to the needs of the school or college.
3. Students will write a report about their project and give an oral presentation.

Private study
