Module summary

This module is for students who have completed a beginners module in Ukrainian or have equivalent knowledge of the language. The focus is on achieving a reasonable level of communication and accuracy in speaking, listening, reading and writing and a deeper understanding of Ukrainian culture. By the end of the module you will be able to communicate on a range of everyday topics and to read and write simple texts.

Objectives

To consolidate knowledge of Ukrainian at beginners’ level and develop skills and competence towards CEFR A2 level/equivalent. On completion of the module students should be able to identify the main language points in familiar contexts and hold conversations in Ukrainian on the topics covered. Emphasis is placed both on grammar and communicative efficiency, and students are introduced to all the basic grammar points of the language and will be able to speak and write on several everyday topics.

Learning outcomes
1. Demonstrate an understanding of commonly used instructions, commands and expressions in the topics covered
2. Read short texts in Ukrainian
3. Handle short conversations in familiar contexts
4. Understand, and make themselves understood by, a native speaker in specific contexts
5. Demonstrate a knowledge of the key areas of Ukrainian grammar
6. Improve their generic linguistic awareness skills that can be applied in the study of other languages

Skills outcomes
On completion of the module students will:
- have a lower intermediate knowledge of the Ukrainian language;
- demonstrate good linguistic and analytical skills;
- demonstrate good presentation and communication skills;
- have acquired skills essential for successful independent language learning;
- be competent users of a number of electronic resources for studying Ukrainian and other languages.


Syllabus

The module covers topics such as:
- Exchanging information about planned and past activities
- Expressing wishes, desires and awareness of different possible scenarios and outcomes
- Basic news reports and commentaries
- Different aspects of Ukrainian culture (e.g. film, music, social media).
- The history of Ukraine

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be regular homework tasks and written and oral exercises not formally assessed for the purposes of formative feedback.
