Module summary

This module seeks to provide a foundation in Physics to equip students to transition successfully into their chosen degree specialism. Emphasis is on consolidating and extending the core physics learned at high school, but this time delivered and assessed in English. This module is thus closely aligned with modules in English Language to provide a platform for higher level study.

Objectives

Core physics knowledge and understanding will be developed through delivery and discussion within class sessions.

Problem solving will be practised in class and as self-study.

Experimental skills will be learned and practised in the laboratory.

Scientific English literacy will be developed throughout as all activities are delivered and discussed in English.

Professional reporting mechanisms in English will be developed through laboratory work.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students will be able to:
1. know and understand core physics needed for Engineering programmes;
2. interpret and solve physics problems written in English;
3. undertake physics experiments where instructions are written in English;.
4. acquire and analyse data;
5. present a summary of lab work in written English.

Experimental physics: measurement precision, resolution and accuracy; significant digits, propagation of errors, curve fitting;
Newton's laws of motion;
Uniform circular motion;
Simple harmonic motion;
Optics, interference and diffraction;
Photoelectric effect;
Laws of Thermodynamics: Conduction, convection and radiation;
Kinetic theory;
Pressure and forces in a liquid;
Electrostatics, Coulombs law;
Electric fields and potential;
DC Electricity Electromagnetism: Generators, motors;
AC Electricity.

The two one hour exams in semester 1 and Semester 2 will be mid-term exams, testing material covered during the period of teaching immediately before the exams. The two hour exam will be the final exam, testing materials covered throughout the syllabus.
