Module summary

This module focuses on new emerging digital technologies and their transformative impact upon organisations and the society as a whole. The module applies a strategic perspective on how managers and leaders can respond to the challenges, leverage the opportunities that emerge from this development, and implement the necessary change required to remain competitive and sustainable in the increasingly digital world.


Digital technologies are transforming the ways that firms do business and societies organise their economies. This module develops an understanding of how developments in emerging technologies, information systems, internet-based innovations and mobile communications technologies trigger radical changes in the economic contexts, organizational models and strategies of organisations. Through this understanding students learn how to approach the strategic opportunities and challenges that digital technologies present to managers trying to lead and adapt organisations to a world increasingly dominated by digital work.

The module explores the impact of digital technologies on organisations and the society as a whole in a range of important scenarios. It goes on to consider current trends and forecasts of technology development and how they will lead to further disruption and transformation. The focus of the module is on how managers and leaders respond by developing strategies; leading transformation and implementing change the necessary change required to remain competitive and sustainable in the digital world.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Identify and evaluate opportunities and barriers for digital transformation in various types of organisational contexts
2. Demonstrate critical assessment of the outcomes of digital transformation efforts
3. Identify new digital organisational and operating models to create new markets and applications
4. Critically identify and propose suitable types of digital transformation of existing organisational and operating models
5. Assess the importance of change management and socio-technical implications in the process of digital transformation in organisations

Emerging and enabling technologies: Big Data AI, Machine Learning, Blockchain, RFID, IoT, Cloud Computing, 3D printing, Robotics, Augmented Reality, etc.

Designing digital transformation for smarter operations and supply chains

Implementing digital transformation: Approaches of facilitating the necessary development and change processes

Impact analysis of digital transformation relying on different forms of analysis
