Module summary

This module will cover main techniques of influence and intervention drawn from on Michie et al’s (2011) Behavioral Change Wheel which considers behaviour in terms of the underlying capability, motivation and opportunity behind it. You will learn how to develop an evidence-based behaviour change intervention, and how to evaluate its effectiveness. You will build up your knowledge of a range of theoretical aspects of techniques of influence, and this will culminate in the (self-identified) case study which you will evaluate as your assessment.

Objectives

This module will cover the main techniques of influence and intervention drawn from Michie et al’s (2011) Behavioural Change Wheel. This is based on a review of behaviour change interventions and considers behaviour in terms of the underlying capability, motivation and opportunity behind it. This approach can be used to develop interventions to change behaviour in a range of domains. The module will be tailored to applications of the theories discussed and provide useful skills for a variety of business functions as well as for personal development.

Learning outcomes
Successful completion of this module will help you to
1. Identify and analyse situations where behaviour change is desirable
2. Synthesise situational factors with behaviour change frameworks to determining the type of intervention which is likely to be most effective
3. Reflect on and address the ethical implications of influence and behaviour change and interventions
4. Critically evaluate the effectiveness of any behaviour change intervention

This could include a variety of activities, such as reading, watching videos, question practice and assessment preparation.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Teaching methods will include a variety of delivery models, such as face-to-face teaching, live webinars, discussion boards and other interactive activities. There will be opportunities for formative feedback throughout the module, including non-assessed MCQs, quizzes and verbal feedback.

In addition, students will receive formative feedback on their proposed assignment topic before they make substantive progress on it.

Students will identify a situation (real, from their experience or from the public domain) as the basis for their case study. Guidance will be provided in the online sessions. They will provide a short summary of the situation (100-150 words), and the ML will approve it as suitable before they proceed. A list of suggested topics may also be provided.
