Module summary

In this module students will be prepared to undertake their PhD research project by researching and writing a literature review on their chosen topic related to their PhD research topic.

Objectives

The aim of the module is to train the student with effective literature survey skills and critical analysis of published literature. During the module, the students will undertake a thorough review of an area directly related to their chosen PhD project.
Objective:
- To Acquire skills in literature searching
- To acquire skills in reading and critical analysis of available literature
- To identify shortcomings, strength, gaps in current literature and clearly describe opportunities for future research
- To acquire detailed knowledge of the subject area and understanding of the problem
- To identify and justify the research topic, design and methodology.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes :
1. To perform a comprehensive literature survey on their topic of interest;
2. Effective read and analyse published scientific work;
3. Critically summarise the available literature on a topic;
4. Present key findings of published data and identify their weakness and strength;
5. Justify the need for a new line or further development of an existing line of research

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills:

Finding, managing and assessing digital information, Use on online learning resources, Presentation of findings, Critical thinking, Assessment of others scientific research

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

On week 5 , students present a review of a classic paper related to the topic of their PhD and receive formative feedback on their critical analysis of the paper and presentation. The presentation must include a review of the topic and any strength or weekness identified by the student. The seminar sessions cover this element.

The 4x2h sessions offer supervised literature survey and critical analysis and one-to-one discussions with the module leader.
