Module summary
This module will equip students with specialist knowledge to develop understanding of technical textiles, and nonwovens. Characterisation methods, modelling procedures and product design practices will be covered. The module will provide students opportunities to critically address the challenges in existing fibrous assemblies as well as design new structures for a range of consumer and industrial applications.Objectives
This module will:1. Provide specialist knowledge and insightful understanding of structure-property-performance relationships of a range of technical textiles and nonwovens.
2. students with the skills to design technical textile and nonwoven products for consumer and industrial applications.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Develop expertise on the underlying concepts and characteristics of technical textiles and nonwovens.
2. Critique the relationship between structure, properties and performance of technical textiles and nonwovens.
3. Characterise specific technical textiles products accurately.
4. Investigate current issues through research, and critically and creatively evaluate technical and/or nonwoven textiles.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Take an active role in working and to develop professional relationships with others.
6. Employ analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills to engineer suitable textile structures for functional applications.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
As a part of the Group Project, the students will submit coursework through Minerva and will be given feedback before the formal submission. This will scaffold the preparation of summative assessment. Each student group will submit a coursework proposal in the early part of the project and get feedback in the same week. Student will have chance to ask questions on their coursework assignment after each lecture and in seminar.Methods of assessment

Each group of students will submit a report in the context of developing a specific new technical textile product with the topic and product chosen by themselves (Feedback will be given in the seminars and formative feedback on the Literature Review component via Minerva). The coursework will be used to assess the student’s ability to use appropriate problem-solving skills and research skills (see LOs) to evaluate material structures and properties used in a specific technical textile product, this assignment will also be used to assess student’s knowledge and competence to use bibliographic databases to critically review the state-of-the-art.
