Module summary

This module covers basic British Sign Language that you can use to communicate about yourself. It is at A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR https://www.coe.int/en/web/common-european-framework-reference-languages/table-1-cefr-3.3-common-reference-levels-global-scale). It is designed for people who have no previous knowledge of the language. If you already have CEFR A1 or above then this module is not for you. It is a skills discovery module, which means that it can be taken in any year of your programme for which you have discovery credits available, with the credits counting towards progression and award.If this module runs in both semesters, you can take it in either semester 1 or semester 2 but not both.

Objectives

Through this module you study the basic British Sign Language needed to communicate about yourself such as personal details, your home, people important to you, your daily routine, your likes and dislikes, your interests, and your studies. You will learn relevant vocabulary, start to become familiar with the forms of the language, and gain basic knowledge of British Sign Language grammar in the present and future tenses.

Through the British Sign Language you observe in class you will become familiar with classroom language. Class activities are communicative/task-based and involve working in pairs or groups. You are expected to self study between classes as well as preparing for the assessment.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Communicate about yourself in British Sign Language with sufficient clarity to be understood by a proficient British Sign Language user
2. Use familiar everyday British Sign Language expressions and very basic phrases in the present and future tenses

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
3. Identify opportunities, in this case the opportunity to learn a new language
4. Adopt learning strategies appropriate to the learning of a new language

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Feedback in class on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Feedback on a draft script for the video. Students will also be encouraged to make use of other opportunities for feedback, for example making use of resources through the Language Zone (https://students.leeds.ac.uk/languagezone), using digital resources, and engaging in other opportunities to put language skills into practice outside the taught sessions.

This assessment is marked on a pass-fail basis. Resits will be assessed by the same methodology as the first attempt.
