Module summary

This module develops knowledge in the identification, monitoring and mitigation of engineering geological hazards which may result in impact on people or assets. The module provides an overview of several key engineering geological hazards from landslides to climate change and helps students develop an ability to interpret, analyse and assess hazards, resilience and sustainability in both the technical and economic terms that they will encounter as part of their studies and careers.


The main module objectives are to:
1. demonstrate techniques for the evaluation of hazards and mitigation of risks within a civil engineering environment.
2. To identify, on the basis of fully developed ground models, how geotechnical design can be made more resilient to natural hazards and to changing environmental factors.
3. To review the current state of knowledge about sustainable approaches in ground engineering and optimal risk management strategies.

Learning outcomes
By the completion of this module students should be capable of:
1. Evaluating of key geological hazards affecting any given site;
2. Providing, on the basis of an assessment of geological, geophysical and geomorphological processes, advice on increasing the resilience of geotechnical structures over their design life of an engineering project;
3. Consideration of state of the art and alternative design strategies to improve sustainable use of the ground and risk management.
4. Critically analyse and defend current issues in engineering geology to a professional or public audience


Problematic engineering soils and their associated ground risks; Geological hazards; concepts of hazard and risk; Risk management framework; landslides and landslide hazard assessment; earthquake engineering and seismic risk;; floods and coastal hazards; carbon counting in engineering; resilience to a changing climate; material re-use and engineering geological considerations for sustainable energy; geotechnical security of lifelines and challenges of infrastructure engineering; education and training in managing natural hazards and the natural environment.
