BA Chinese and Thai Studies(For students entering from September 2024 onwards)
This programme equips students with the linguistic skills needed to understand a range of written, spoken and
broadcast material in Chinese and Thai, and the ability to communicate effectively with Chinese and Thai speakers. The deliberately modern bias of the programme aims to produce graduates with an all-round proficiency in Chinese and Thai, along with a range of transferable skills and insights.
Students begin both languages from scratch (although there is provision for those with some prior learning of Chinese or Thai) and follow an intensive language programme in their first year. The second year and third years are spent at a university in Thailand, and in China or Taiwan. In each case students follow a prescribed course of study in language and, where offered, non-language courses.
Students return to Leeds in their fourth year to follow advanced upper-level language and non-language modules in both subjects. By the final year of the programme students should be able to interpret relevant material in a wider sense, fitting it into the broader social, political, economic and cultural context of present-day China, Thailand and the East Asian region.
Students are expected to graduate with a sound knowledge of the Chinese and Thai languages, invaluable experience of life in Thailand and in a Chinese-speaking society, and an understanding of the wider context of the East Asian region.
