BA Environment and Business (For students entering from September 2024 onwards)
Businesses are increasingly facing significant challenges and opportunities as a result of environmental issues (such as climate change, deforestation, and desertification) and social issues (such as labour and human rights, corruption, and transparency). Stakeholders (including government, shareholders, business customers, local communities, consumers, employees, and NGOs) are demanding that companies change their operations and activities so they can be instrumental in improving the environment and making societies more sustainable.
The objective of the BA Environment and Business programme is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to engage with businesses holistically (including their operations, strategy, finance, etc.) so that they can help the business become more sustainability-orientated and improve its relations with its stakeholders.
The BA Environment and Business programme prepares students to tackle issues in helping companies become more sustainability-orientated. This includes developing skills in the use of concepts, approaches, methods, and tools that enhance sustainability; providing work-based experience of deploying the above knowledge and skills; and culminating with the students conducting research and completing a sustainability project. The programme will produce graduates skilled in the coupling of sustainability with business approaches that lead to more holistic, integrative, and long-term solutions to environmental and social challenges.
The programme structure is designed to provide students with an overall understanding of how to manage a business whilst considering the implications that their decisions will have on the environment and societies of today and the future.
Environment and Business graduates are better placed to appreciate the fundamental advantages of a sustainability-oriented approach. The graduates have a systems and holistic perspective where sustainability is an integral part of their education, as opposed to other programmes that traditionally have a narrower approach where sustainability is a peripheral issue.
