BA Thai Studies

The Thai programme is distinctive for the way that it integrates language development with contextual awareness and understanding. It also uniquely offers the opportunity for students to integrate Thai studies with other Southeast Asian, and East Asian studies modules.

In the first year, the programme will initially take students from no (or some prior) knowledge of Thai language to an intermediate standard which will provide an adequate platform for language development during the year abroad. This will include a basic mastery of the Thai language, both oral and written, with a vocabulary of several thousand words which will enable the speaker to make daily transactions (order food, ask directions, find accommodation etc.) and discuss in a reasonably fluent manner elements of both Thai and Western society and culture.

Students will also have a sound understanding of the basic features of Thai society and social values and know both how to 'fit in' and what to expect in their daily lives during the second year of their programme which is spent at a university in Thailand.

Students will return to Leeds in their third year and will follow advanced level language and non-language modules across a range of disciplines and topics, drawing on the broad expertise in East Asian Studies. By the end of their programme of study, students should be able to interpret material in a wider sense, fitting it into the broader social, developmental, cultural and political Thai and Southeast Asian contexts.

Students are expected to graduate with a sound knowledge of the Thai language, valuable experience of life in Thailand, and a deep understanding of Thai society.

Candidates with prior knowledge of Thai will, subject to a placement test, study EAST1510 East Asian Religions and Philosophies instead of EAST1703. EAST1510 cannot then be taken as an optional module.
