Many aspects of modern life are unsustainable, either environmentally, economically, or socially. Why is this? What can we do about it?
BSc (Hons) Sustainability and Environmental Management explores why unsustainable practices develop, from underlying drivers to the behaviours of individuals, and will provide you with the knowledge and skills to tackle these problems. Ultimately, this programme is designed to take students who want to make a difference and equip them with the skills to do so.
To do this you'll combine environmental and social science approaches. Environmental sciences will allow you to build an understanding of the fundamental environmental basis of sustainability. Perspectives from politics, economics, policy and law will then allow you to explore the social dimensions of sustainability and develop pathways towards more sustainable societies. You’ll be trained in a wide range of data collection and analysis methods and will refine your research skills through research projects and hands-on field training.
Sustainability and Environmental Management will also provide you with excellent career potential. Sustainability is at the core of how governments, societies, researchers, and businesses think today, and there is increasing demand for graduates who combine an understanding how our decisions affect the world with the desire and expertise to guide better decision making. Sustainability and Environmental Management will ensure you graduate with the knowledge and skills you need to contribute to whatever career you embark on. You will also be encouraged to think strategically about your career and develop your CV, as well as practising transferable skills such as interviews.
Teaching is interdisciplinary and developed through a range of approaches including lectures, seminars, and fieldtrips. Fieldwork is an important opportunity to see how the issues discussed in the classroom affect the real world, as well as providing excellent opportunities for your own research (and for getting to know your colleagues better!).
Sustainability and Environmental Management is accredited by the Institute for Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).
