Programme specification:

The information on this page is accurate for students entering the programme from September 2024. For students who entered the programme before September 2024, you can find the details of your programme: MBiol, BSc Biological Sciences (Biotechnology with Enterprise) (Integrated Masters)

Biotechnology and Enterprise is an interdisciplinary program that provides the novel opportunity for you to gain a grounding in a broad range of biological sciences areas, which underpin the growing biotechnology industry, combined with an understanding of the knowledge and skills required to bring a new idea to the marketplace.

In your first year you will learn about the fundamental processes and molecular mechanisms that underpin biological processes in all living organisms and business concepts critical for the biotechnology sector. Through further compulsory modules you will gain essential foundational knowledge in modern microbiology and genetics, alongside the study of entrepreneurship and business planning. The practical skills modules will build your practical, numeracy and problem-solving skills, and develop your understanding of the biotechnology lecture material. By choosing from a range of optional modules will have the opportunity to add flexibility to these foundational areas of biological sciences and to further develop your business awareness.

At the end of year 1, our flexible degree structure offers you the opportunity to transfer to relevant degree courses in the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology, subject to space and academic background approval.

In your second year you will build upon the knowledge and experience you gained in your first year by diving deeper into topics important to both biotechnology and enterprise. For instance, you will learn how omics-based approaches and ‘big data’ is being used to overcome global challenges in biomedicine, learn the underpinning science of sustainable food production and the fundamentals of business planning and entrepreneurship. Through more extended projects, the second-year biotechnology skills modules provide the opportunity to utilise multiple experimental approaches and take greater responsibility for your work. By choosing from a range of optional modules will have the opportunity to add flexibility to these foundational areas of biotechnology and to further develop your business awareness.

In your third year you will carry out your enterprise project. This will involve working as part of a team with a company outside the university, to deliver a project relevant to their needs. In order to further develop your biotechnology knowledge, you will have the opportunity to choose optional advanced modules in areas such as microbiology or cancer biology. In addition, you will begin to work with your research project supervisor to explore their research area and define a project in year four. This is supplemented with training in advanced research skills (both inside and outside of the laboratory environment), as you work as part of an interdisciplinary group to answer a research question.

In the final, masters, year of the programme you will commence your extended research project and become integrated into the group of your research supervisor. This will allow you to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during your degree, develop your research skills in greater depth and produce a report containing material of publishable quality that could contribute to a research publication. To further enhance your subject-matter knowledge and skills, you will be required to enrol on 30 credits of specialist Masters-level modules with options ranging from Advanced Biomolecular Technologies through to Medical Diagnostics.
