Our Transport Planning and the Environment MSc will equip you with the knowledge and skills to address the environmental impacts of transport. From urban pollution, public health and policy making to road safety management and traffic network modelling – you’ll gain insights into how a range of disciplines can work together to design sustainable solutions to global challenges.
You’ll learn the techniques behind cutting-edge data collection and analysis that help improve the air quality of our cities and the wellbeing of your fellow citizens. You’ll also study environmental research techniques to help develop transport networks founded on robust evidence, sustainable and equitable principles, state-of-the-art modelling, accurate data analysis, and a profound understanding of human psychology.

Distinctiveness of programme
This programme is designed to:
- give students from a wide variety of backgrounds a firm grounding in the principles, techniques, issues and practice of transport planning and the environment and to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to understand and propose solutions to promote effective solutions to environmentally related transport problems which fit within the broader aims of transport and social policy.
Graduates will be equipped with core technical knowledge in data collection, modelling, planning methods and engineering design. Further specialisation in environmental policy, or environmental monitoring/modelling practice will enable students to demonstrate a set of skills focussed on the environmental aspects of transport planning.
Students will be capable of developing a range of practical solutions such as designing less polluting transport systems through to evaluating environmental taxation policy.
By the end of the programme, students will also have acquired a wide range of generic research skills in experimental and analytical techniques, communication, team working and problem solving. Students will be well equipped for a professional or research career in issues relating to transport and the environment in government, consultancy and research.

- Experience expert theoretical and practical teaching delivered by a programme team made up of researchers and academics from the Institute for Transport Studies with an international reputation (members of our team advise European and national governments on emissions control) and who have extensive expertise across a variety of transport disciplines
