MSc Geographical Information Science Distance Learning
The overall aim of this programme is to provide students with an engaging open distance learning experience. Whether studying as an individual or working in an organisation, students will receive core training and specialist skills development in Geographical Information Science (GISc) and related areas.
The programme will provide core GIScience skills training (Year 1) followed by specialist skill development in a range of contemporary domains as selected by the student (Year 2) and an opportunity to undertake a piece of independent original GIScience research under the guidance of a research leader (Year 3).
The unique selling point of this programme is the choice offered with regards to specialist analytical modules spanning human/physical geography and technical skills. Following successful completion of Year 1, students can select modules of greatest interest or value to them from a range of options, including environmental GIS, geodemographics and web-GIS.
More specifically, the programme(s) aims are to:
1. provide widening opportunities to pursue a postgraduate programme using distance learning materials, resources and support;
2. provide contemporary learning and teaching experiences that are relevant to everyday work and which use practical ‘real world’ and up-to-date examples;
3. develop technical abilities and competencies in range of data handling skills such as data extraction, cleaning, management and analysis, spatial and statistical modelling, programming, mapping and visualisation;
4. encourage innovative uses of data that have a significant geographical components in the broad domains of environment, remote sensing, Big Data, demographics and planning;
5. develop data savvy graduates with the abilities and confidence needed to apply in-demand GIScience skills to a range of application areas/problems.
