Typically 'A' levels grade ABB or equivalent (not including General Studies)
BTEC grade DDM (distinction, distinction, merit)
CACHE Diploma A
A validated Access Course certificate
Entry through the University of Leeds mature entry scheme, or equivalent

IELTS: 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in any component

A satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (or, for candadates from overseas, the equivalent level of clearance).

Programme specification:

The programme will: give you an in-depth and practical understanding of the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). We equip you with the skills needed to explain and describe language and you will consider the practicalities of teaching, so you can develop effective lesson planning and classroom management techniques. The programme is organised around four key themes: language description, language teaching, language learning, and an experiential theme. In the first year you will take a foreign language or study academic English. You will gain first-hand experience in a language classroom whilst supporting English language teachers, and will study core modules related to the overarching themes. In years two and three you will enhance your knowledge of each of these themes, whilst also building on your classroom experience in new learning contexts. Research is an integral part of this programme; we will show you how to conduct research in TESOL so you can continue to develop your skills when you enter the workplace or undertake further study. In your final year you will carry out an independent research project.

The BA TESOL will give you the skills, knowledge and practical awareness for a variety of careers in English language teaching, primary teaching, industry, commerce, media, or research where an understanding of the language learning and teaching process is valuable.

Students are required to study either ELU1002 English for Communication (Sem 1) or ELU1003 English for Communication (Sem 2) or any FLTU module at any level, as appropriate (20 credits). FLTU modules must be chosen in the Discovery module section

Discovery modules:

Candidates will be required to study a minimum of 20 credits of discovery modules.
If students have not selected to take either ELU1002 or ELU1003, they must study an FLTU module.
If a student has chosen to study an FLTU module, they must also study a further 20 credits of discovery modules.

Students who choose an FLTU module must also study a further 20 credits of discovery modules.
