BSc Psychology with Education (International)

Entry requirements:

A-level: AAB in one or more of: psychology, geography, mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, geology, economics, statistics, environmental science or computing.
A-levels in critical thinking, citizenship studies and general studies do not typically form part of our offer but we welcome them as a fourth A-level. The Extended Project is welcomed but is not included as part of our offer. We do not accept any vocational qualifications. We do not accept Applied A-levels with the exception of applied science. We accept only one performance based A-level (eg photography, drama, art/design, music, media studies or PE)
GCSE: English language at grade 4 (C) and mathematics at grade 5 (B) + one of the following at grade 5 (B): physics, biology and chemistry, science or additional science. We also accept GCSEDA science (dual award) at grades BC (5 4)
Access to HE: 60 credits, including 45 credits at level 3, 30 of which must be at distinction level and 15 credits at pass level plus GCSE Maths and Science at grade B (5) and English Language at grade C (4).
BTEC: We accept science-based BTEC qualifications (with Distinctions), alongside non-performance/arts based A-levels.
Cambridge Pre-U: D3D3 M1 to include at least one of the following at D3 psychology, geography, mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, geology, economics, statistics, environmental science or computing
IB: 35 points overall, with no less than 5 awarded in any one subject. You must study a science at higher level and achieve grade 6 or above.
Irish Highers (Leaving Certificate): AAAAAB to include maths and science
Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers: AAAAB, including maths and science, in Advanced Highers. In some circumstances we would consider a mixture of Highers and Advanced Highers.
Foundation year: Science based with overall score of 75% (or equiv of AAB)
IELTS: 7.0
A satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (or, for candidates from overseas, the equivalent level of clearance).

Programme specification:

Psychology has never been so important in terms of influence on educational policy and practice. This is evident in recent international research agendas into evidence based intervention and applications of neuroscience to education. The nexus between Psychology and Education represents an exciting and cutting edge field of study with diverse theoretical and methodological approaches. As research active academics who regularly collaborate across disciplines we are exceptionally well placed to deliver a research informed student experience.

This dynamic programme will give you in depth coverage of all key areas of Psychology and opportunities to apply this to current issues and debates in Education. You will explore the ways in which psychology and education are conceptualised and integrated in different learning contexts. You will consider how the disciplines combined can be applied to real life scenarios and to inform decision making at multiple levels within society. You will be able to select optional modules from both Psychology and Education to extend your knowledge in areas of particular interest to you.

At level 3, you will undertake a placement in a school or a service allied to education which will enable you to understand the relationship between theory and practice and to use insights from Psychology in an educational setting. You will have the opportunity to study abroad or to spend a year working in an appropriate professional setting and to reflect on those experiences. The programme uses a wide variety of teaching methods and assessment techniques to encourage the development of a broad range of analytical and communication skills. It will provide you with a base from which to pursue a career in Education and/or Psychology or in allied fields or to pursue further study at postgraduate level.

To ensure that there is a balance of workload across semesters, there are two ways of choosing your Level 3 options:

a) choose one PSYC option in each semester and the EDUC/LLLC option in Semester 2
b) choose the EDUC option in Semester 1 and both PSYC options in Semester 2

Students are required to study and pass 30 credits from the following list of optional Psychology modules. Please check that you have satisfied any pre-requisite study before selecting a particular module.

Students state their Psychology preferences via an online questionnaire. Level 3 Psychology module numbers are capped to facilitate a range of teaching and assessment methods. While we cannot guarantee places on specific modules or 'first choices' for everyone, we use algorithms developed by the University of Leeds IT Service to ensure that students get as many preferred modules
