Programme specification:

The MA in Performance Design programme is devised and taught by academics who are leaders in the field of performance design and scenography and who have a track record of research outcomes including major published volumes, practice as research, historical analysis of scenographic innovations and contemporary contributions to the evolution of the discipline.

The programme is taught within the context of an MA portfolio which engages with contemporary performance and arts practices and their role in the wider cultural, social and economic landscape. The programme places the practice of performance design in the wider critical context of the creative and cultural industries.

The MAPD curriculum is informed by current research in performance design, especially research into; immersive and participatory forms of performance design, design-led performance, audience experience and contemporary spectatorship.

The delivery of the programme combines rigorous academic study with practice-led investigation.

It offers students opportunities to use the theatre studio as a laboratory for design experimentation and to explore how scenographic materials (light, space, objects, costume, sound, etc.) can work together to make meaning for an audience. Students will be encouraged to extend their own practice through exploring a range of ways of devising, designing and rehearsing performance material.

Teaching will employ a wide variety of techniques from lecture and seminars, small group and individual presentations and blended learning through the University’s VLE. The University has an impressive recent record in international student satisfaction in this area (http://www.leeds.ac.uk/info/20019/international/1966/student_satisfaction)
The School has been at the forefront of the use of this technology as an integral part of its delivery strategy. Students will be expected to contribute to discussion fora, group and individual blogs and will be able to access a detailed resource base of scenographic material, articles and links.

There are opportunities for creative collaboration with other MA students in the School of PCI. This is likely to occur as an integral aspect of the delivery, but also in extra and co-curricular events such as the School’s annual public festival postgraduate festival of performance work.

Students have access to excellent facilities, especially through stage@leeds, (Theatre spaces: Alec Clegg Studio, Stage One 280-seater theatre, Dance studio), fully-equipped black box studios with control rooms, support from a team of specialist theatre and media technicians and access to PCI resources such as Wardrobe, costume making facility, scenic workshop, sound and video editing facilities, specialist computer facilities and rehearsal spaces.

Students will benefit from the School’s excellent relationship with a number of local and national performance companies including Opera North, West Yorkshire Playhouse, IOU Theatre, DV8 Physical Theatre, Slung Low, Louise Ann Wilson Company, Balbir Singh Dance Company.
