2i or better BSc (Hons) degree, or equivalent, in a physical science discipline, other degrees may be considered, such as engineering. Relevant professional experience may be taken into account.

At the end of the programme students should:

Demonstrate in-depth, specialist knowledge and mastery of relevant techniques and demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of concepts, information and techniques at the forefront of climate and atmospheric science;
Exhibit mastery in the exercise of generic and subject-specific intellectual abilities;
Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to their own research or advanced scholarship;
Take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others;
Be proactive in formulating ideas and hypotheses and to develop, implement and execute plans by which to evaluate these;
Critically and creatively to evaluate current issues, research and advanced scholarship in the discipline and have developed their own independent approaches to work and problem-solving
Have gained a quantitative approach to climate and atmospheric sciences;
Have acquired a thorough training in research skills and methodology for physical science graduates, this includes working alongside current postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellow during their research projects;
Be experience in presenting the findings of their own research, they will be expected to attend the institute research away day where they will present their own work to the rest of the parent research institute (ICAS);
Undertaken a detailed six-month research project in a chosen area, often in collaboration with an external institution and involving field-work abroad;
Ultimately they will be suitably prepared for a future professional career in climate/atmospheric science research or for PhD study.

The programme will:

- Use of proven teaching capacity in a broad range of relevant subjects from the natural sciences to deliver a unique research-led MRes programme.
- The MRes CAS will be the only programme of its kind in the UK, and builds upon the existing MRes PEA programme but with considerably more focus on the climate and atmospheric sciences.
- It will set a benchmark for training in climate and atmospheric science in preparation as a sustainable research pathway
- It will comprise of a range of research-oriented activities which will enhance the quality and volume of climate and atmospheric science research activity at Leeds, both directly (e.g. through student projects) and indirectly (e.g. by increasing the pool of high-quality PhD students)
- One distinctive (but not unprecedented) feature will be the replacement of the traditional thesis with a manuscript suitable for submission to an academic journal. This will teach the key transferable skill of communicating results professionally and efficiently, and will increase the frequency of publication of the students’ research.
- Given the dedicated profile toward climate and atmospheric sciences, if it envisaged that the Royal Meteorological Society will accredit this course.
