Programme specification:
There has been a rapid acceleration in adopting digital tools and innovative approaches in the world of fashion that meet new customer behaviours and industry needs (including 3D design, video shopping, augmented/virtual reality). Equally, the notion of fashion with textiles has never been stronger. By considering the whole life cycle of fashion products from the conception of textiles to the end-user and beyond, we gain a holistic perspective of an industry that is undergoing rapid change and offering much greener and zero-waste fashion alternatives.
With this in mind, the BA Fashion Design Innovation combines fashion and textiles heritage with innovative design practices and methods, and with the latest digital and production technologies. Students explore form, material and process through creative thinking, problem-solving strategies and human-centred design approaches to develop beautiful, responsibly produced, and innovative fashion and textile products. Students also learn a range of theories and methods that inform fashion research, as well as fashion's relationship to historical context, cultural practices, social trends and values, and ideological assumptions.
All in all, students learn in an integrated way, combining and balancing hand-making and traditional skills with digital technologies, and applying material and textile innovation to fashion design. At level one, all students take part in a year of common study that encompasses elements of fashion design innovation in an environment that mimics real work conditions in a fashion studio (either physically, virtually, or both). At levels two and three, students develop fashion and textiles specialisms, alongside their continued fashion design practice. Contextual subjects examining design history and theory further help students to develop awareness and judgement in relation to their studio practice and personal development. Research methods and strategic fashion managment, on the other hand, help students to contextualise their design practice and solve real world problems in industry and society.
The programme's emphasis on gaining academic, practical, research, and transferrable skills, equips students for a broad range of prestigious employment, enterprise or postgraduate opportunities. Furthermore, with an emphasis on the role fashion, textiles, innovation and digital technology can play in creating fashion to address future opportunities, requirements and challenges, students gain skills that set them apart from other graduates in this field and at the international level. Such skills allow students to develop their career opportunities across a diverse range of roles within the professional field of fashion, including design, textiles, retail, manufacturing and production, creative and research practice, etc.
