The programme will:

- The distinctiveness, appeal and strength of University of Leeds Joint Honours programmes lie in the unusual combination of depth, breadth and flexibility which they offer, as well as in the exceptional range of language combinations available
- They permit students to study two languages in depth and to degree level, while acquiring a broader range of skills than is typically possible within a single honours degree
- Students acquire the flexibility of mind and variety of learning techniques needed to switch between two languages
- A further element of distinctiveness is the flexibility of the programme structure, which allows students to change direction easily
- These programmes provide the opportunity to undertake study abroad.

Research Skills:
1. Develop students' independent research and project management skills so they are able to undertake, with supervision, an autonomous piece of sustained research work (the Final-Year Project).
2. Develop advanced presentation skills in oral and written modes.
3. Develop analytical, critical thinking and reasoning skills.
4. Act with academic integrity and develop awareness of research ethics appropriate for the field(s) of study.

Language Skills and Intercultural Awareness:
1. Develop advanced language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
2. Develop an understanding of the vocabulary, grammar and registers of the language(s) studied.
3. Develop an understanding of the ways in which cultures interact.
4. Equip students to work and function effectively in another country.

Subject Knowledge:
1. Develop a general knowledge of the societies in which the target language is spoken.
2. Develop in-depth knowledge of aspects of literatures, cultures, linguistic contexts, history, politics, social and economic structures.
3. Equip students with the knowledge needed for a critical understanding of the field(s) of study.

Students are required to take 120 credits in Level 1.

Compulsory modules:

Students must study the following compulsory modules:

Students with prior knowledge of Chinese may, subject to a placement test, study more advanced language modules (EAST2550/EAST2570) instead of EAST1010/EAST1020, as appropriate in their first year.

Optional modules:

Chinese students will also be required to study 20 credits from the following studies modules:

LANGUAGE AND CULTURE BROADENING:
ALL students are required to study 20 credits from the following optional modules. Students are NOT permitted to take a module in either of their chosen languages:

Students will spend this year of their programme in a country or region where the language of interest is used both in official contexts and as a daily means of communication. Where this period of residence abroad involves studying at a University, a list of approved locations and institutions will be provided for you during Level 1. Where you are able to choose a location, you must have this approved by the Year Abroad Tutor in your language area.

Compulsory modules:

Students will be required to take the following core residence abroad module. Please note that the appropriate Level 1 module(s) in the language needs to be passed in order progress to the Year Abroad.

Students must study a minimum of 125 credits in Level 2. The supernumerary credits will count towards your degree classification.

In order to be eligible for an Honours degree, students must meet the normal Rules for Award by passing all modules which are designated to be passed for award or progression and by passing the required number of credits at each level as specified in the Curricular Regulations (at least 200 credits at Level 2 or above, of which at least 100 should be at Level 3).

The Term Abroad module SPPO9002 will not be available for students starting their programme from September 2023 onwards.

Optional modules:

Students will be required to study a minimum of 20 credits from the following optional modules:

As students will be on their Term Abroad in the latter half of Semester 2 they should ONLY select modules which are running in Semester 1.

Students are required to take 120 credits in Level 3. Students are required to take modules in the same two languages as in Level 1 and Level 2.

Students are required to take ONE of the following Final Year Project modules.

Students who have chosen to complete a Final Year Project in Spanish will be required to study 40 credits from the list below:

Students who have chosen to complete a Final Year Project in Chinese will be required to study at least 20 credits from the options below:

The following modules can be taken in and count towards either Chinese or Spanish credits. Students may choose to study up to 40 credits from the modules below instead of EAST/SPPO optional modules.

Students wishing to choose MODL3800 as one of their Spanish options must take a minimum of 60 credits in Spanish in the final year including SPPO3010.
