The programme will:
- The distinctiveness, appeal and strength of University of Leeds Joint Honours programmes lie in the unusual combination of depth, breadth and flexibility which they offer, as well as in the exceptional range of language combinations available
- They permit students to study two languages in depth and to degree level, while acquiring a broader range of skills than is typically possible within a single honours degree
- Students acquire the flexibility of mind and variety of learning techniques needed to switch between two languages
- A further element of distinctiveness is the flexibility of the programme structure, which allows students to change direction easily
- These programmes provide the opportunity to undertake study abroad.
Research Skills:
1. Develop students' independent research and project management skills so they are able to undertake, with supervision, an autonomous piece of sustained research work (the Final-Year Project).
2. Develop advanced presentation skills in oral and written modes.
3. Develop analytical, critical thinking and reasoning skills.
4. Act with academic integrity and develop awareness of research ethics appropriate for the field(s) of study.
Language Skills and Intercultural Awareness:

Students must ensure that they enrol on the correct French and Italian language pathways. Those students with prior knowledge of either language should ensure that they meet the pre-requisites for Advanced French and/or Italian - see Coursefinder for specific requirements.
Students MUST choose at least ONE language of which they have prior knowledge.
In level 1, students must take 120 credits in total. Students are required to take a minimum of either 40 or 60 credits in both French and Italian, depending on whether they have prior knowledge of the languages. All students should take 20 credits of language and culture broadening modules. Only those students taking two languages of which they have prior knowledge will be able to take 20 credits of Discovery modules (or take further optional FREN/ITAL modules) at level 1. Students are required to pass a minimum of 40 credits in each of their two main subjects.

Students are required to take 120 credits in Level 2. All students must take a Term Abroad module as well as the compulsory language modules. Those students taking 30 credits of language modules must take 60 credits of studies modules, that is 30 credits in each language. They may substitute 15 credits of studies modules in one language with MODL2005 and/or they may substitute 15 credits in the other language with language and culture broadening modules. Students taking 45 credits of compulsory language modules must take 45 credits of studies modules, with at least 15 credits of studies modules in each language. They may take an additional 15 credits in either language or they make take MODL2006 or a language and culture broadening module instead. Students are required to pass a minimum of 40 credits in each of their two main subjects.

Students will spend this year of their programme in a country or region where the language of interest is used both in official contexts and as a daily means of communication. Where this period of residence abroad involves studying at a University, a list of approved locations and institutions will be provided for you during Level 2. Where you are able to choose a location, you must have this approved by the Year Abroad Tutor in your language area.
