Students must ensure that they enrol on the correct French language pathway. Those students with prior knowledge of the language should ensure that they meet the pre-requisites for Advanced French - see Coursefinder.
In level 1, students must take 120 credits in total. Students are required to take 40 credits of PIED modules, a 20 credit MODL module and a minimum of either 40 or 60 credits in French, depending on whether they have prior knowledge of the language. Students who have prior knowledge of French are required to take 40 credits in French. Students who have no prior knowledge of French are required to take 60 credits in French. Students combining Politics with advanced French will have 20 credits of Discovery modules (which can also be taken as further optional modules in French). Students with no prior knowledge of French will have no space available for Discovery modules at level 1. Students are required to pass a minimum of 40 credits in each of their two main subjects.

Students taking FREN1010 and FREN1020 may choose to study up to 20 credits from the following optional modules (instead of Discovery modules).

Students taking FREN 1010 and FREN1020 may choose to study up to 20 credits of Discovery modules (or take further optional modules in French).

At Level 2, students must study 120 credits. Students are required to take a minimum of 40 credits in Politics and 40 credits in French. Of the remaining credits, 20 should be taken in either Politics or French; the final 20 credits may be taken as Discovery modules or in further Politics or French optional modules. Students are required to pass a minimum of 40 credits in each of their two main subjects.

POLITICS:
Students will be required to study TWO of the following core Politics modules, one from each list.

Students may choose to take up to 40 credits of additional modules from the following list:

Students taking FREN2010 will be required to study a minimum of 20 credits from the following optional modules;
Students taking FREN20XX may study up to 40 credits from the following optional modules.
Students wishing to choose MODL2001 as one of their French options must take a minimum of 60 credits in French Level 2.

Discovery modules:

Students may choose to spend up to 20 credits of Discovery modules in a third subject or pursue additional modules in Politics or French.

Students will spend this year of their programme in a country or region where the language of interest is used both in official contexts and as a daily means of communication. Where residence abroad involves studying at a University, a list of approved locations and institutions will be provided for you. Where you are able to choose locations, you must have these approved by the Year Abroad Tutor in your language area.

Students will be required to study the following core residence abroad module. Please note that the appropriate Level 2 module(s) in the language needs to be passed in order progress to the Year Abroad.

In Level 3 students must study 120 credits, which includes a 40-credit Final Year Project Module. Students are required to take a minimum of 40 credits in both French and Politics: the Final Year Project module can be taken in - and count towards - either of the two subjects. Any remaining credits should be taken as optional modules in either French or Politics, or as Discovery modules.

Students wishing to choose MODL3800 as one of their French options must take a minimum of 60 credits in French in the final year including FREN3010.

Students may choose to spend up to 20 credits of Discovery modules in a third subject or pursue additional optional modules in Politics or French.

Finalists may only take Level 1 modules that are listed as Discovery Skills modules (skd) and only to the value of 20 credits.
