Students must ensure that they enrol on the correct German language pathway. Those students with prior knowledge of the language should ensure that they meet the pre-requisites for Advanced German - see Coursefinder.
In level 1, students must take 120 credits in total. Students are required to take 40 credits of PIED modules, a 20 credit MODL module and a minimum of either 40 or 60 credits in German, depending on whether they have prior knowledge of the language. Students who have prior knowledge of German are required to take 40 credits in German. Students who have no prior knowledge of German are required to take 60 credits in German. Students combining Politics with advanced German will have 20 credits of Discovery modules (which can also be taken as further optional modules in German). Students with no prior knowledge of German will have no space available for Discovery modules at level 1. Students are required to pass a minimum of 40 credits in each of their two main subjects.

Students will spend this year of their programme in a country or region where the language of interest is used both in official contexts and as a daily means of communication. Where residence abroad involves studying at a University, a list of approved locations and institutions will be provided for you. Where you are able to choose locations, you must have these approved by the Year Abroad Tutor in your language area.

In Level 3 students must study 120 credits, which includes a 40-credit Final Year Project Module. Students are required to take a minimum of 40 credits in both German and Politics: the Final Year Project module can be taken in - and count towards - either of the two subjects. Any remaining credits should be taken as optional modules in either German or Politics, or as Discovery modules.
