Students must ensure that they enrol on the correct Russian language pathway. Those students with prior knowledge of the language should ensure that they meet the pre-requisites for Advanced Russian - see Coursefinder for specific requirements.
In level 1 students must study 120 credits in total, 60 credits in History and a minimum of either 40 or 60 credits in Russian, depending on whether they have prior knowledge of the language. The remaining credits for students with prior knowledge of Russian may consist of Discovery modules in a third subject or further modules in Russian. Students are required to pass a minimum of 40 credits in each of their two main subjects.

Students will spend this year of their programme in a country or region where the language of interest is used both in official contexts and as a daily means of communication. Where this period of residence abroad involves studying at a University, a list of approved locations and institutions will be provided for you during Level 1. Where you are able to choose a location, you must have this approved by the Year Abroad Tutor in your language area.

At Level 2, students must study 120 credits. Students are required to take a minimum of 40 credits in History and 40 credits in Russian. Of the remaining credits, 20 should be taken in either History or Russian; the final 20 credits may be taken as Discovery modules or in either History or Russian. Students are required to pass a minimum of 40 credits in each of their two main subjects.

Students are required to study at least 40 credits of History modules, to include 20 credits from each Option List. One module must be in Semester 1, one in Semester 2. They may also choose a further 20-40 credits from any combination of modules from Option List 1, Option List 2 and Option List 3.

The following modules offer you the chance to explore the diversity of approaches to the study of the past. Some of the modules give you the chance to research and practise History in collaboration with others, both within and outside the University.

Students may wish to study further modules from this list. These modules are excellent preparation for the final year project.

Students will be required to study a minimum of 20 credits from the following optional modules:

Students may choose to study up to 20 credits of discovery modules in a third subject or pursue additional modules in either History or Russian.

In Level 3 students must study 120 credits. Students are required to take a minimum of 60 credits in History and a minimum of 40 credits in their chosen language. Overall, students must take 100 credits across their two subjects. The remaining credits should be taken in either of the named subjects or taken as Discovery modules. All students must take 40 credits as a Final Year Project module, which can be taken in - and count towards - either of their two subjects. Please note that not all modules will be available every year.

In order to be eligible for an Honours degree, students must meet the normal Rules for Award by passing all modules which are designated to be passed for award or progression and by passing the required number of credits at each level as specified in the Curricular Regulations (at least 200 credits at Level 2 or above, of which at least 100 should be at Level 3).

Students are required to take ONE of the following Final Year Project modules. Students of Russian can select any module. Students of Chinese and Thai may not select MODL3350.

Students will be required to study between 60-80 credits in History.

All students must take a Special Subject module in History, regardless of whether they are taking their Final Year Project in History as well. Students who take their Final Year Project in their chosen language subject area must take at least one further option in History. If you take your Final Year Project in History, you will have no further space for History options beyond the Special Subject.

Students will be required to study 40 credits from the following Special Subject modules:

The following modules offer you the chance to explore the diversity of approaches to the study of the past. Only students not taking their Final Year Project in History will have space for further options.

Students can study up to 20 credits from the following optional modules:

Final Year students may only take ONE Level 2 module at Final year. If you choose a module from the following list, you must not take a Level 1 or Level 2 module as an option in your chosen language or as a Discovery module (e.g. MODL2xxx)

Students will be required to study between 40-60 credits in Russian. The number of credits you have available for options modules will depend whether you choose to take your Final Year Project in Russian or History. If you take your Final Year Project in Russian you will take fewer optional modules in this subject.

Students will be required to study up to 20 credits from the following optional modules:

Discovery modules:

Students may choose to spend up to 20 credits of Discovery modules in a third subject or pursue additional modules in History or their chosen language.
Finalists may only take Level 1 modules that are listed as Discovery Skills modules (skd) and only to the value of 20 credits.
