Normally three subjects at advanced level including Music. (Double Music A Levels are not normally regarded as two subjects).

Programme specification:

This programme will educate students through the medium of music so that by the end of the programme the graduate should possess flexible and transferable skills including those involving:
- a developed capacity for independent learning,
- self-expression and communication (in written and other forms),
- the use of new technology,
- social organisation.

The programme lays a foundation of discipline-specific knowledge through the study of a variety of periods, genres, styles and contexts. Within this broadly-based syllabus, there is also provision for specialisation in particular aspects of musical study (eg composition, performance, musicology, music technology, aesthetics and criticism).

Music degrees at Leeds encompass western art music, popular and world musics. These are studied through the mediums of history, theory, criticism, composition, performance and music technology as well as including important developing areas such as jazz, film music and music psychology. The diverse nature of this programme offers considerable freedom of choice in subject areas, allowing students to gain a rounded knowledge as well as developing expertise in their chosen specialities. Music is approached subjectively and objectively as a discipline from which practical lessons can be learnt.

Recent graduates have careers in performance, teaching, arts administration, journalism and broadcasting, publishing, computing and librarianship. Some graduates take postgraduate degrees. Graduates will have received a solid preparation for the world beyond university and will be equipped with a wide range of music specific skills and transferable skills in areas such as technology.

The School of Music's staff have international distinction in the fields historical and critical research. This School is renowned for its commitment to progressive learning methods, reflected in its partcipation and central role in many initiatives in higher education in music. The School is greatly advantaged by the exceptional music and cultural life in the City of Leeds, which includes an International Concert Season, Opera North, West Yorkshire Playhouse, the Leeds International Film Festival and a vibrant club scene.

The University also has a rich musical life and the School runs its own concert series throughout the academic year. This features performances by our own orchestras, choirs and ensembles alongside visiting professionals and ensembles in residence. Teaching is supported by excellent facilities including a concert hall, a music library with listening and video facilities and a well equipped electronics studio.

The BA Music degree is a versatile programme that lays a foundation knowledge in history, theory, composition, technology and general study skills upon which more specialized pathways can be chosen. Other areas such as musicology, criticism and analysis are also introduced. Performance modules are available at all stages, although they are never compulsory, and students can be assessed as a soloist or as part of an ensemble. The final year offers the greatest scope for students to pursue their own interests, and it is possible to undertake a dissertation on a chosen subject, composition portfolio, technology project or recital.

Our programmes strike a balance between personal exploration and the skills needed to be a good music graduate. Many areas, such as composition, performance, analysis and technology, are approached progressively with new skills being constantly added. Other areas, such as history, are more self-contained, examining the topics in context.

Our teaching methods include large lectures, seminar groups and one-to-one tutorials. Assessment is by coursework and examinations, with project work in analysis, musicology, criticism, technology and performance. Students also give recitals and present composition portfolios.
