Programme specification:
Using industry-standard equipment in our textile design studio, you'll develop practical skills, in knitted, woven, stitched and digitally printed textiles, with the opportunity to specialise in one process. All pathways provide the opportunity to work on designs for fashion or interiors using industry-led briefs, taught by world-leading staff and with excellent technical support. You’ll also study the general principles of design, including historical and cultural contexts of design practice, and explore the fundamental aspects of textile design in an intellectually stimulating research environment. This gives you an excellent academic grounding in design, developing skills that appeal to employers. You'll also have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience by undertaking a work placement as part of our Year in Industry programme or Cultural exchange with our Year Abroad programme.
In Year 1, You will undertake a studio based introduction to the major textile design processes including knit, weave and print, supported by studio based visual research including stitch and a theoretical introduction to fabric technology and virtual manufacture.
You will undertake core studies in the historic, cultural and technological aspects of art & design. You will have the opportunity to personalise your studies through our extensive list of optional and discovery modules.
In Year 2, you will focus your textile design practice in either knit, weave or digital print. Each process is suitable for fashion or interior outcomes. You will develop your design and technical skills supported by appropriate visual research, cultural and market analysis skills and further your independent research shills.
You will develop your academic understanding of the core design subjects and an awareness of professional standards. You will have a further opportunity to personalise your study through industry focused optional and discovery modules.
In Year 3, you will synthesise work towards a final collection of design work and produce a written investigation into a textiles subject of your choice.
All teaching is informed by internationally leading research undertaken in the School of Design
