Programme specification:
This programme will train students as intelligent performers through a combination of University and performance-based study.
Skills are inculcated through the medium of music so that by the end of the programme the graduate should possess flexible and transferable abilities including those involving:
- a developed capacity for independent learning;
- self-expression and communication (in written and other forms);
- the use of new technology; and social organisation.
Students will demonstrate a distinct strength in the study of performance while also developing in other areas of musical enquiry.
Host institutions for the year abroad are carefully selected for the appropriateness of their educational provision to individuals and compliance with existing year abroad mechanisms; the School of Music maintains close relationships with these particular identified partners.
Students graduating from this programme will have benefitted from the breadth and variety of provision offered to all University of Leeds music students (staff teaching specialisms include composition in a variety of genres, music technology/electro-acoustic music, performance, opera, editing, early music, psychology of music, folk/traditional/world musics, popular music, film music, commercial music and production) but will have committed themselves to performance specialism. The year abroad does not attract the usual UK top-up fee.
The School of Music is one of the largest music departments in the UK and offers an exceptionally wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. It provides a balanced portfolio of single-honours degrees covering western classical music, popular music and world musics. A Specialised programme in Music, Multimedia and Electronics is jointly delivered with another school, and an extensive array of joint-honours combinations is also available.
The School brings together internationally acclaimed scholars (with expertise extending into such specialist areas as music psychology, film music and ethnomusicology), composers and performers, and has a strong reputation for the quality of its teaching and its research. Teaching is supported by excellent facilities on campus including centrally located music libraries with listening and video facilities and sophisticated electronic and recording studios.
The new building on the Leeds site, completed in December 2002, has modern teaching, practice, study and studio facilities and is interconnected with the fine Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall
As well as offering opportunities to study at the highest level, the University boasts a very active music society, which includes a symphony orchestra, a chorus, a sinfonia, brass and wind bands and a dance band among its numerous ensembles.
Leeds is one of the leading cultural centres of the North of England. It has excellent theatres, cinemas and art galleries and is one of the most exciting regions for music in the country. There is a varied programme of performances and festivals which feature a huge range of musics, including rock, jazz, folk, early and contemporary music as well as music from many different parts of the world. There is a thriving club scene. The city is also is home to Opera North and the English Northern Philharmonia, and hosts an International Concert Season and the world-famous International Piano Competition.
