Programme specification:
The programme will realise an innovative approach to the study of International Relations. By emphasising the theoretical and empirical applications of International Relations, it will foster the ability of students to use theory in an empirical context. Not only will this approach provide students with a broader range of transferable skills; it will also prepare them more effectively for an academic climate in which considerations of impact beyond academia have become critical. This study will shape your understanding of global politics in the contemporary world by introducing you to a wide range of theories, approaches and stimulating debates surrounding international politics and relations.
Students will also analyse topics central to the functioning of the international system and explore contemporary and historical approaches, focusing on country-specific, regional and international processes. Our emphasis on international studies invites an interdisciplinary approach and reflects the broadening nature of the subject beyond the confines of inter-state relationships.
You will develop expertise in a specialist area of interest to you, whilst working with leaders in the field of international relations. As well as enhancing your knowledge in international relations and the complex and contradictory forces that shape the global agenda, this programme will equip you with excellent research skills, and develop your knowledge of relevant methodologies and approaches.
Classes will be delivered in a modern, flexible and student-centred manner, allowing the students more input into the construction of their programme of study and a greater degree of engagement with the scholarly community of research active academics. This approach will play to the existing multidisciplinary strengths of POLIS and will reflect and advance the new and distinctive research environment that the School is seeking to develop.
