Programme specification:

This programme offers a unique combination of intercultural (or cross-cultural) studies with the study of modern languages, including English. It aims to help students develop a broad understanding of the nature of contemporary relations between different cultural groups and hence the cultural sensitivity, together with the high-level communicative skills, needed for use in international professional settings or in further study of the field.

Intercultural Studies modules comprise ‘Skills and Issues in Intercultural Studies' which focuses on improving understanding of the processes and contexts of interaction between different peoples, and ‘English in International Communication' which examines the nature of language and of English in particular, as both native tongue and lingua franca. Students also undertake a project/dissertation on a topic related to Intercultural Studies.

Professional Language modules comprise ‘Methods and Approaches in Translation Studies’ and practical modules in specialised translation in a wide variety of language pairs (subject to passing level test/availability), and/or English for professional purposes modules (public speaking and document drafting).

Optional Centre for Translation Studies/MAPLIS modules include ‘Managing Business across Cultures’, ‘Introduction to Interpreting Skills’, ‘Introduction to Screen Translation’, ‘English for Translators’, and others. A wide variety of optional modules are also available in applied linguistics and in the history, culture and/or politics of the world’s regions, nations and ethnic groups. There is also a wide variety of foreign language modules at all levels to choose from.
