Programme specification:

The programme will:
- enable students to work across more than one discipline by providing the flexibility to study three disciplines at level one;
- allow the study of two disciplines to the same depth as any single honours student but with less breadth in each discipline;
- provide a basis for further advanced study in either of the disciplines or in a cognate interdisciplinary area.

General
- The distinctiveness, appeal and strength of University of Leeds joint honours programmes lie in the unusual combination of depth, breadth and flexibility which they offer, as well as in the exceptional range of degree combinations available.
- They permit students to study two disciplines, in depth and to degree level while acquiring a broader range of skills than is typically possible within a single honours degree.
- They are emphatically joint honours programmes, rather than integrated programmes: students can therefore make the links they choose from the wide choice of optional modules available within each discipline. Within certain parameters, they thus effectively make connections and devise pathways according to their own preferences, rather than being faced with a prescribed combination of modules chosen for them by others.
- The students must acquire the flexibility of mind and variety of learning techniques needed to switch between the two disciplines.
- A further element of distinctiveness is the flexibility of the programme structure, which allows joint honours students to change direction more easily, and more radically, than single honours students.
- Many of these programmes also allow the opportunity to undertake a work placement, field work or study abroad.

In Level 1 students must study 120-125 credits. Students are required to take 60 credits in Chinese and 60 credits in Portuguese.

Compulsory modules:

Candidates will be required to study the following compulsory modules:

Students with prior knowledge of Chinese may, subject to a placement test, study more advanced language modules (EAST2550/EAST2570) instead of EAST1010/EAST1020, as appropriate in their first year.

Students with prior knowledge of Portuguese may, subject to a placement test, study the more advanced language module SPPO1083 instead of SPPO1080 and SPPO1081.

- Students with prior knowledge of Portuguese may, at the discretion of the programme manager, substitute SPPO1083 (40 credits) for SPPO1080 and SPPO1081 (40 credits).

Optional modules:

Candidates will be required to study 20 credits from the following optional modules:

Candidates will spend the second year in China or Taiwan.

In Level 2 students must study 125 credits. Students are required to take 50 credits in Chinese and 45 credits Portuguese, plus the Term Abroad, worth 30 credits, which will be spent in Portugal.

In order to be eligible for an honours degree, students must meet the normal Rules for Award by passing all modules which are designated to be passed for award or progression and by passing the required number of credits at each level as specified in the Curricular Regulations (at least 200 credits at level 2 or above, of which at least 100 should be at level 3).

Candidates will be required to study the following compulsory modules:

NB. Students who have completed SPPO1083 and have performed exceptionally well in that module, may, at the discretion of the programme manager, take MODL2005 Linguists into Schools and teach Portuguese in a local school, instead of taking SPPO2091.

The Term Abroad module SPPO9002 will not be available for students starting their programme from September 2023 onwards.

Optional modules:

Candidates are required to take at least 20 credits from the following optional modules:

- As students on this programme will be on their Term Abroad in the latter half of Semester 2, you should only select EAST modules which are running in Semester 1 only.
- The research project undertaken as part of FOAR2000 must relate to East Asian Studies.
- Not all modules will be available every year.

Candidates will be required to study 30 credits from the following optional modules:

Students may also choose to study the below module, as long as they are not already enrolled onto Linguists into Schools.

In Level 3 students must study 120 credits, which includes a 40-credit Final Year Project Module. Students are required to take 40 credits in Portuguese and 60 credits in Chinese: the Final Year Project module can be taken in - and count towards - either of their two subjects.

Optional modules:

Candidates are required to study ONE of the following Final Year Project modules.

Candidates who choose to focus on the Portuguese side of their programme will be required to take 40 credits of the additional Chinese credits below:

- Students wishing to choose MODL3800 as one of their Chinese options must take a minimum of 60 credits in Chinese in the final year including EAST3275.
- Candidates may not take a module from this group that they have taken in another group/year.
- Not all modules will be available every year.

Candidates who choose to focus on the Chinese side of their programme will be required to take 20 credits of additional Portuguese credits from the options below:

- Students wishing to choose MODL3800 as one of their Portuguese options must take a minimum of 60 credits in Portuguese in the final year including SPPO3110.
- Not all modules will be available every year.

The following modules can be taken in and count towards either Chinese or Portuguese credits. Students may choose to study up to 40 credits from the modules below instead of EAST/SPPO optional modules.

- Students wishing to choose MODL3800 as one of their Chinese options must take a minimum of 60 credits in Chinese in the final year including EAST3275.
