Programme specification:
The programme will:
- permit students to broaden their intellectual and cultural horizons through a year studying abroad;
- provide an environment for study that will encourage an enthusiasm for chemistry and an appreciation of its application in a wide variety of contexts;
- provide students with a broad appreciation of chemistry and the necessary background and intellectual training for a wide range of careers;
- develop a student's ability to apply their chemical knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in chemistry;
- provide the knowledge and experience which are an essential preliminary to performing original research in chemistry or a related multidisciplinary field, either in industry, government research laboratories, or academic institutions;
- enable the students to aspire to the highest professional standards in chemistry;
- give a broad and balanced foundation of chemical knowledge, of scientific principles in a wider context, and of transferable skills that are of value in both chemical and non-chemical employment;
- provide students with an understanding of the principles, both theoretical and experimental, of organic, inorganic, physical, theoretical and medicinal chemistry;
- provide an insight into selected areas of chemistry where major and important developments are currently taking place;
- develop an appreciation of the importance of chemistry in industrial, economic, environmental and social contexts;
- enable students to satisfy the admission criteria for Associate Membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry (AMRSC).
Progression through all years is dependent on achieving a minimum 100 credits including passing compulsory modules
Relationship with other programmes:
The BSc Chemistry programme shares a common first year with the BSc in Medicinal Chemistry, and transfer between these courses will only be allowed with the permission of the Director of Student Education until the points of divergence at the end of Year 1.
Transfers onto MChem programmes beginning at Level 2 or 3 are dependent on a student achieving an overall academic average of 60%. At Level 2 this must include an average of 60% or higher in compulsory theory modules.
Students wishing to pursue an International programme will be given guidance and support through the University Study abroad scheme which also coordinates the allocation of Study Abroad places. Students must secure a placement at an approved international institution through the University Study Abroad scheme. Students that fail to secure a placement through the study abroad scheme will transfer to the equivalent Chemistry programme which is based at Leeds for the duration of the degree.
Students that obtain an international placement may transfer onto the equivalent MChem programme subject to meeting the academic progression requirements for MChem at the end of Level 2.
Students may transfer into the international programme from other programmes subject to obtaining an approved placement through the Study Abroad scheme and meeting the required academic progression targets.
Students wishing to pursue an Industrial programme will be given appropriate assistance and guidance in seeking an industrial placement at the commencement of Year 2. If a placement is not obtained, then the student will transfer to the equivalent Chemistry programme which is based at Leeds for the duration of the degree.
Students that obtain an industrial placement may transfer onto the equivalent MChem programme subject to meeting the academic progression requirements for MChem at the end of Level 2 and the placement being approved as having appropriate chemical content for the MChem programme.
Students may transfer into the Industrial programme from other programmes subject to obtaining an approved industrial placement and meeting the required academic progression targets.
Students wishing to exit their studies at any time must se ek advice from the Student Education Service staff in the School.

Students will be required to seek approval from the module leader and complete a Change of Module form to enrol on CHEM3666. Students who take CHEM3666 will need to change to a 10 credit Literature Project (CHEM3437) instead of CHEM3480 and choose an additional 20 credits of options.
The award of the Honours Degree requires obtaining a minimum of 300 credits, with a minimum of 100 credits at Level 3 (including CHEM3480 and CHEM3420).
