Programme specification:

The programme will:

- permit students to broaden their intellectual and cultural horizons through a year studying abroad;
- provide an environment for study that will encourage an enthusiasm for chemistry and an appreciation of its application in a wide variety of contexts with particular in-depth emphasis on medicinal chemistry;
- provide students with a broad appreciation of chemistry and medicinal chemistry, and the necessary background and intellectual training for a wide range of careers;
- develop a student's ability to apply their chemical knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in medicinal chemistry;
- provide the knowledge and experience which are an essential preliminary to performing original research in chemistry or a related multidisciplinary field, either in industry, government research laboratories, or academic institutions;
- enable the students to aspire to the highest professional standards in chemistry;
- give a broad and balanced foundation of chemical knowledge, of scientific principles in a wider context, and of transferable skills that are of value in both chemical and non-chemical employment;
- provide students with an understanding of the principles, both theoretical and experimental, of organic, inorganic, physical, theoretical and medicinal chemistry;
- provide an insight into selected areas of medicinal chemistry where major and important developments are currently taking place;
- develop an appreciation of the importance of chemistry in industrial, economic, environmental and social contexts, with a particular emphasis on the relevance of medicinal chemistry;
- enable students to satisfy the admission criteria for Associate Membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry (AMRSC).


Progression through all years is dependent on achieving a minimum 100 credits including passing compulsory modules.

Students wishing to exit their studies at any time must seek advice from the Student Education Service staff in the School.


Relationship with other programmes:

The BSc Medicinal Chemistry programme shares a common first year with the BSc in Chemistry, and transfer between these courses will only be allowed with the permission of the Director of Student Education until the points of divergence at the end of Year 1.

Transfers onto MChem Medicinal Chemistry or Chemistry programmes beginning at Level 2 or 3 are dependent on a student achieving an overall academic average of 60%. At Level 2 this must include an average of 60% or higher in compulsory theory modules.

Students will be required to seek approval from the module leader and complete a Change of Module form to enrol on CHEM3666. Students who take CHEM3666 will need to change to a 10 credit Literature Project (CHEM3437) instead of CHEM3480 and choose an additional 20 credits of options.

The award of the Honours Degree requires obtaining a minimum of 300 credits, with a minimum of 100 credits at Level 3 (including CHEM3480 and CHEM3424).
