- Applicants should have, or expect to graduate with, the equivalent of a good BA Honours degree.
- Previous specialisation in some aspect of Medieval Studies is an advantage.

Programme specification:

The programme will enable students to develop:
- a European and interdisciplinary perspective on the Middle Ages
- high-level critical and analytical skills
- the mental agility to absorb and synthesise material from a range of disciplines.

It will prepare students to carry out independent research at a high level and give students the opportunity to make links with related professional organisations, including the Royal Armouries, Kirkstall Abbey and Abbey House Museum, and the Yorkshire Archaeological Society.

By the point of successful completion of the MA, students will have acquired:
- reading knowledge of one or more of the languages read and spoken internationally in Medieval Europe
- technical skills in a relevant area
- technical bibliographical skills necessary to produce high-level research in Medieval Studies
- the ability to identify and investigate the main issues in a large topic
- the ability to develop reasoned arguments fully supported by primary and secondary evidence.

- To pass the MA, a student needs to have a credit-weighted average mark of 50 or above, taking into account all 180 credits.
- To pass the MA with merit, a student needs to have a credit-weighted average mark of 60 or above, taking into account all 180 credits.
- To pass the MA with Distinction, a student needs to have a credit-weighted average mark of 70 or above, taking into account all 180 credits.

Compulsory modules:

Candidates will be required to study the following compulsory modules:

Students will normally take both MEDV5000M and MEDV5001M, but the following alternatives are available:

(a) Candidates who test (by examination) as research-capable in Medieval Latin must take at least 60 credits in Medieval language(s) (which can include MEDV5020M).

(b) Students who test as beginners in Medieval Latin may take MEDV5000M only, and in addition, 30 credits in one medieval vernacular language.

(c) Students who test as beginners in Medieval Latin and wish to take both MEDV5000M and MEDV50001M may study a further language module in lieu of an option module.
