A good Second Class Honours (or equivalent) degree in a physical science, engineering or technology discipline. Appropriate industrial experience at a professional level will be considered.

Programme specification:

In addition to a secure background knowledge of materials science, the programme is designed to equip all graduates with a range of advanced skills in engineering materials, thereby enhancing their career prospects in the materials or metallurgical production industries as well as those industries where correct selection, specification and processing of materials is a key to their success. The programme structure is designed to cater for entrants with a diverse range of science or engineering backgrounds: to this end an open learning course will be made available to all registered students in advance of the commencement of their programme which will bring all students to a common minimum level of knowledge and understanding. Upon graduation, students will be specialists in materials science and engineering, functional materials, metallurgy, nanomaterials or soft solids (through an appropriate combination of optional modules and a short design project organised in line with guidelines prescribed by the IoM3 for accreditation).

The MSc programme consists of a number of compulsory and optional modules as well as a major research project, totalling 180 credits. The taught modules cover a range of advanced topics and current process technologies in materials science and engineering and metallurgy. There is also the opportunity to satisfy particular interests through the research project topic. The project accounts for one-third of the credits/marks for the MSc programme and enables students to gain experience of planning, executing and reporting on work of the type they will undertake in an industrial or academic environment.

Programme Aims:

At the end of the programme students should be able to:
- demonstrate in-depth, specialist knowledge and mastery of techniques relevant to the areas of materials science and engineering;
- demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of, and an ability to critically analyse, concepts, information and techniques at the forefront of materials science;
- exhibit mastery in the exercise of generic and subject-specific intellectual abilities;
- demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to their own research;
- take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and develop professional relationships with others;
- formulate ideas and hypotheses and to develop, implement and execute plans to evaluate these;
- evaluate current issues, research and advanced scholarship in materials science and engineering.
