Entry requirements:

Entry Requirements including English Language
GCSE English language and Maths grade C or above or equivalent
Relevant undergraduate degree in a related field including BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology (Cardiology) or BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science (Cardiac Physiology), MBChB or equivalent e.g. HNC/D Medical Physics & Physiological Measurement (MPPM), professional body exams such as British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) accreditation.
English requirements for candidates for whom English is not their first language:
GCSE English language grade C or above
IELTS: 7.0 overall with not less than 6.5 in every skill
TOEFL: 600 (paper based) with not less than 5.0 in “test of written English”
TOEFL iBT: 100 with minimum scores of 22 in listening, 24 in reading, 24 in speaking and 25 in writing
The candidate must show on application (personal statement) or during the selection process, the following:
• Evidence of recent study (normally within the last 5 years)
• Working in a clinical setting
• Two satisfactory references (one academic)

Programme specification:

At the end of the programme students should be able to critically evaluate and apply detailed subject knowledge and professional competencies which are underpinned by relevant research and evidence based practice. Students should be able to develop effective and appropriate management plans for service users with chronic cardiac conditions and critically analyse the impact of echocardiography in adults. Students should be working at an advanced level, within a multi-professional team to improve the outcomes of service users undertaking echocardiograms. Students should provide advanced practice within professional boundaries and the guidance of professional bodies, working at an advanced level within their scope of practice and recognise the need for lifelong learning.

ARCS5216M – Fundamentals of Echocardiography
Module summary:
This module will provide a detailed understanding of the principles of echocardiography and the use of science and technology to give an appreciation of its role in patient diagnosis and treatment.
On completion of this module, students will be able to:

- Demonstrate and synthesise a detailed understanding of principles of echocardiography
- Critically evaluate the current technologies currently utilised in echocardiography
- Critically evaluate echocardiography imaging equipment and techniques
- Discuss the complimentary role echocardiography plays alongside other medical imaging modalities in medical diagnosis
- Demonstrate and apply knowledge of the scientific and technological principles and processes of diagnostic ultrasound describing their relevance to the ultrasound image and the equipment utilised
- Demonstrate proficiency in recording ultrasound images and Doppler outputs
- Critically evaluate and debate the safety issues related to diagnostic ultrasound to enable optimal use of the equipment within the current, internationally recognised recommendations for safe practice actively reducing any hazard to patient and staff

Outline syllabus:

• Critically evaluate the clinical role of echocardiography & Doppler
• Evaluate and critically appraise service provision/relationship with patients/reporting and documentation
• Critically evaluate the importance of imaging physics & instrumentation
• Evaluate and appraise Doppler physics, fluid dynamics & instrumentation
• Critically evaluate recording methods
• Demonstrate recognition of cardiac anatomy & physiology and cardiac functional parameters

ARCS5207M - Echocardiography Pathology

Module summary

This module will cover many areas of echocardiography pathology essentials for physiologists to operate in the clinical setting on a daily basis. This module is particularly relevant for practicing cardiac Physiologists and allied health professionals who work within and are involved with cardiac patients requiring cardiac ultrasound.
Aspects covered will include mitral, aortic, tricuspid and pulmonary valve disease plus pericardial disease, cardiomyopathies, coronary artery disease associated with systolic LV function, MI and its complications, pulmonary hypertension and RV functional assessment, diseases of the aorta plus adult congenital heart disease.


On completion of this module students will be able to interpret and report imaging examinations in echocardiography.

Learning outcomes:
On completion of this module students will be able to:

- Critically evaluate and synthesise an in-depth, specialist knowledge of normal and pathological findings relevant to echocardiography
- Critically evaluate and synthesise a sophisticated understanding of concepts, information and techniques at the forefront of echocardiography
- Critically and creatively evaluate current issues, research and evidence based practice relating echocardiography
- To take a proactive, self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others
- Demonstrate effective decision making skills in routine situati ons
- Reflect critically on practice and the role of imaging in the management of the patient referred for routine investigation of common clinical conditions.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:

- Critically appraise an individual’s clinical need for appropriate ultrasound and select an appropriate technique
- Interpret and report appropriate ultrasound examinations competently
- Critically evaluate clinical and other relevant information to determine when additional examinations / procedures are required
- Critically evaluate ultrasound examinations for technical and diagnostic quality

Critically evaluate and synthesise an in-depth, specialist knowledge of normal and pathological findings relevant to echocardiography, including aetiologies and echocardiographic features of the mitral, aortic, pulmonary & tricuspid valves plus;

• Prosthetic valve assessment
• Cardiomyopathies
• Pericardial disease
• Coronary artery disease & left ventricular systolic function
• Diastolic function of the left ventricle
• Myocardial Infarction & its consequence
• Pulmonary Hypertension & right ventricular functional assessment
• Diseases of the aorta.
• Adult congenital heart disease
