Entry requirements:
Anticipated entry requirements
Students must have the following:-
1. Normally a BSc (at least 2:1) honours health related degree from a recognised higher education institution in an appropriate subject e.g. BSc (Hons.) in Diagnostic Radiography, Nursing, Midwifery, Clinical Physiology or Medicine.
2. Have secured a suitable clinical placement (where appropriate) and:
o employment with, or secondment to, a diagnostic imaging department or with access to diagnostic imaging facilities, approved by the University of Leeds
o identification of 2 suitable clinical mentors within this department
o Employer agreement to undertake the course and provide adequate time and facilities to meet the learning outcomes of the programme.
o Satisfactory references and attendance at an admissions event
Advanced standing
Students may access the Post Graduate Diploma or MSc if they have already obtained a relevant medical ultrasound or Post Graduate Certificate/Diploma or related academic credit from the University of Leeds within the last five years and have maintained their clinical practice/CPD in the interim.
Opportunities for accreditation of prior certificated learning (APCL) and or accreditation of prior experiential learning (APEL) are available.
English language requirements
English to the standard equivalent of level 7 on IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with no element below 6.5.
International students
International students will be able to access the course if they have an approved clinical placement in their home country with 2 suitably trained mentors. All students must attend all the required face-to-face taught content on campus and be able to access all the synchronous online taught elements of the course.

Programme specification:
The Postgraduate Diagnostic Imaging suite of programmes will deliver a high quality, research-led educational experience in order to develop highly competent practitioners who contribute positively to healthcare service provision. The programmes are multidisciplinary and will appeal to a wide range of local, national and international healthcare professionals who wish to develop their academic and clinical skills, in-depth knowledge and understanding, research and professional practice in specialist areas in medical ultrasound.
Programme content
All students who undertake clinical modules need employment with or secondment to, a clinical diagnostic imaging department with medical ultrasound facilities.
All students without a previous ultrasound qualification will study a combination of the two compulsory modules (Science and Technology of Ultrasound and Professional Issues in Diagnostic Imaging) plus at least one clinical module
o Obstetric Ultrasound
o Gynaecological Ultrasound
o General Medical Ultrasound
Students who are already qualified as sonographers can return to undertake any of the above modules on a free-standing basis.
