Combine your passion for speaking languages with a fascination for how they work, by studying linguistics alongside one of ten languages. You'll develop the spoken and written skills in your chosen language and explore the cultures and histories of the countries where the language is spoken.

Developing expertise in linguistics will help you navigate the uniquely complex phenomenon of language. You’ll explore language acquisition, structure and change, the mental and social processes that shape and sustain human interaction, as well as phonetics – the study of how speech sounds are physically produced.

Studying a language will complement this expertise as you’ll be able to use these linguistic concepts and theories to enhance your language learning. Your year abroad will further enhance your language learning.

In your final year, you'll develop a project on a topic of your choice to demonstrate the skills and knowledge that you have gained during this four-year degree.

This joint honours degree offers you teaching of the highest standard, in a research-intensive environment where enthusiastic experts and students come together to explore linguistics and languages. You’ll also be encouraged to get involved in a range of activities organised by the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies and Language@Leeds.

We offer the following languages at two entry levels: beginners or with prior experience (e.g. A-level or equivalent). If you have prior experience in Arabic, please contact us before applying:

At Level 1, students must study 120 credits. Students are required to take 60 credits in Linguistics and 60 credits in Chinese.

Students will spend this year of their programme in a country or region where the language of interest is used both in official contexts and as a daily means of communication. Where this period of residence abroad involves studying at a University, a list of approved locations and institutions will be provided for you during Level 1. Where you are able to choose a location, you must have this approved by the Year Abroad Tutor in your language area.

Compulsory modules:

Students will be required to study the following core residence abroad module. Please note that the appropriate Level 1 module(s) in the language needs to be passed in order progress to the Year Abroad.

In Level 2 students must study 120 credits. Students are required to take a minimum of 40 credits in Linguistics. Students of Chinese are required to take a minimum of 60 credits in that subject. Overall, students must take 100 credits across their two subjects. The remaining 20 credits should be taken as Discovery modules or in either Linguistics or their chosen language. Please note that not all modules will be available every year.

In order to be eligible for an Honours degree, students must meet the normal Rules for Award by passing all modules which are designated to be passed for award or progression and by passing the required number of credits at each level as specified in the Curricular Regulations (at least 200 credits at Level 2 or above, of which at least 100 should be at Level 3).

Students may choose to study further modules from the following Linguistics options.

Students will be required to studya minimum of 20 credits from the following optional modules. FOAR2000 can only be counted as a Chinese module if the project undertaken relates to East Asian Studies and you have sought prior approval of the Programme Manager.

Discovery modules:

Students may choose to take up to 20 credits of Discovery modules in a third subject or pursue additional modules in Linguistics or their chosen language.

At Level 3, students must study 120 credits. Students are required to take a minimum of 40 credits in Linguistics and a minimum of 40 credits in Chinese.  Overall, students must take 100 credits across their two subjects.  
All students must take 40 credits as a Final Year Project (FYP) module, which can be taken in - and count towards - either of their two subjects (EITHER Linguistics OR Chinese).   

In order to be eligible for an Honours degree, students must meet the normal Rules for Award by passing all modules which are designated to be passed for award or progression and by passing the required number of credits at each level as specified in the Curricular Regulations (at least 200 credits at Level 2 or above, of which at least 100 should be at Level 3).

All students will be required to study ONE of the following Final Year Project (FYP) modules:

Students who take their FYP in Chinese are required to take a minimum of 40 credits and may take up to 60 credits from the list of Linguistics optional modules.   
  
Students who take their FYP in Linguistics may take up to 40 credits from the list of Linguistics optional modules.  

Students who take their FYP in Linguistics are required to take a minimum of 40 credits and may take up to 60 credits from the list of Chinese optional modules.   
  
Students who take their FYP in Chinese may take up to 20 credits from the list of Chinese optional modules. 

The following modules can be taken in and count towards either Linguistics or Chinese credits. Students may take up to 20 credits from the modules below instead of Linguistics or Chinese optional modules.   

- Students wishing to choose MODL3800 as one of their Chinese options must take a minimum of 60 credits in Chinese in the final year including EAST3275.

Discovery modules:

All students may take up to 20 credits of discovery modules in a third subject or pursue additional modules in Linguistics or Chinese.
- Finalists may only take Level 1 modules that are listed as Discovery Skills modules (skd) and only to the value of 20 credits.
